Montenegro Northern Highlands Trail

The day is dedicated to exploring Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The program begins at Black Lake, followed by a walk along its shores and a visit to a viewpoint overlooking the deepest section of the Tara Canyon.

The route continues along the scenic “Durmitor Ring,” passing traditional mountain villages and descending into the Sušica River canyon. Along the way, there are views of one of the most prominent peaks in northern Montenegro, seen from different perspectives, as well as opportunities to observe local plant life.

Further stops include a site with medieval stećci tombstones, viewpoints over the Piva Canyon and Piva Lake, and areas illustrating the geomorphology of the Durmitor massif. The day also includes a visit to a traditional mountain katun (shepherds’ settlement). Return to Žabljak for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel. The journey continues from the mountains towards the Tara River, often referred to as the “Tear of Europe.” The program includes rafting along the river, passing through its rapids and canyon scenery.

The route also features a stop at the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, with views both from the bridge and of the canyon below. There is an option to experience a zip line stretching across the canyon. The day includes time in an area of ancient black pine forest and a walk along a fast-flowing mountain stream, followed by lunch featuring local cuisine after the rafting experience.

The day concludes in the town of Kolašin, where accommodation is arranged in a 4-star hotel. The total distance is approximately 90 km with a driving time of around 2 hours.

The day begins with a walk through the center of Kolašin, including a visit to the local market and an introduction to the town’s antifascist heritage. The program continues to Biogradska Gora National Park and Biogradsko Lake, where there is time for an extended walk around the lake, including encounters with centuries-old trees, often referred to as “tree hugging,” and exploration of the park’s natural environment.

The itinerary also includes a visit to a rural household to learn about the production of traditional Kolašin leafy cheese and to taste local specialties in an authentic setting. In the afternoon, there is an opportunity to spend time by the Tara River or take a panoramic ski lift ride to one of the peaks of Bjelasica Mountain. Return to Kolašin for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel. Total distance is approximately 60 km with a driving time of around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The day begins with a journey to the region of the Vasojevići tribe, one of the largest and most well-known tribal groups in Montenegro. The route includes views of the Komovi Mountains, a protected regional park and a significant natural landmark of the area.

The program continues towards the town of Plav, where the focus shifts to the natural and cultural heritage of the region. The itinerary includes a walk along Plav Lake, the largest glacial lake in Montenegro, as well as visits to the Alipaša Springs and the source of the Skakavica River known as Skakavica Eye. The day also features a stop at the Redžepagića Tower, an important historical and architectural monument in Plav.

Return to Kolašin for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel. The total distance is approximately 200 km with a driving time of around 3.5 hours.

The day begins with a descent through the Morača River Canyon, featuring views of its steep cliffs and emerald waters. En route, there is a stop at the Morača Monastery, known for its frescoes, woodcarving tradition, and historical significance.

The journey continues towards Skadar Lake National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans. Upon arrival, the program includes a boat cruise across the lake, passing areas rich in water lilies and birdlife. After the cruise, there is time in the town of Virpazar, known for its fish cuisine and wine tradition.

The route also includes a visit to the village of Godinje, noted for its distinctive architecture and small family-run wineries, with several viewpoints along the way overlooking Skadar Lake. In the afternoon, return to Podgorica for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel. The total distance is approximately 140 km with a driving time of around 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The final day leads to the region known as Old Montenegro, with a visit to Cetinje, the historical capital of the country, where there is time to walk through its old town. The route continues around Lovćen Mountain and through Lovćen National Park, with viewpoints overlooking Boka Bay. There is an option to climb to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, located at the highest altitude among such monuments in Europe.

The journey proceeds to the village of Njeguši, known for its traditional method of producing smoked ham, followed by a drive towards the Skadar Lake region. Along the way, there is a stop in Rijeka Crnojevića and at the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, overlooking the meanders of the Crnojevića River.

Return to Podgorica in the afternoon for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel. The total distance is approximately 125 km with a driving time of around 2.5 hours.

The tour concludes with breakfast at the hotel in Podgorica. Your driver will then transfer you directly to Podgorica or Tivat Airport for your departure flight.
