Short South Albania Tour: Castles, Culture & UNESCO Cities

Leaving Berat in the morning, we head south toward the Ionian coast and arrive in Sarandë, a lively seaside town and gateway to the Albanian Riviera. A short stop here allows time to enjoy the sea views and soak in the coastal atmosphere before continuing the journey.

From Sarandë, the route leads to the Archaeological Park of Butrint, Albania’s most important archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Walking through the ancient ruins, you’ll discover layers of history left by different civilizations. Along the way, panoramic viewpoints open over the Ksamil Islands, one of the most photographed corners of the country.

The journey continues along the spectacular coastal road over the Llogara Pass, descending toward the Riviera. We stop in Dhërmi, known for its crystal-clear beaches and lively summer scene, before heading on to Himarë. Here, you’ll explore the seaside promenade and visit the Old Town, built around a historic hilltop castle with ancient walls and nearby churches.

In the evening, we return to Sarandë for an overnight stay.

Our first stop of the day is Ksamil Beach, where turquoise water and small islands create one of Albania’s most iconic coastal views, earning it the nickname “the Maldives of Europe.” Turquoise water and small offshore islands make this one of the most photogenic spots in Albania and a perfect place for a few memorable photos.
Leaving the coast behind, we travel inland to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a striking natural spring near Finiq. An easy walk leads to the viewpoint, where deep blue, crystal-clear water and lush greenery create a peaceful setting. There is time to relax and enjoy the surroundings at a nearby café.

By midday, we arrive in Gjirokastër, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its stone architecture. The visit starts in the Traditional Bazaar, once the social and commercial heart of the city, before continuing up to the impressive Gjirokastër Castle, which rises above the rooftops and offers wide views over the “Stone City.”

The experience is completed with a visit to a traditional Gjirokastër house, a fortress-like residence that reflects the city’s unique way of life and history. In the late afternoon, we begin the comfortable drive back to Tirana or Durrës, bringing the journey to an end.
