Zagori Trek: Vikos Gorge, Papingo & Drakolimni

Leave Tsepelovo and follow an uphill trail to Vradeto, the highest village in Zagori. Continue along the edge of Vikos Gorge to the Beloi Viewpoint, where sweeping panoramic views reveal the dramatic landscape and sections of the route ahead. Return to Vradeto before descending to Kapesovo via the historic Vradeto Steps, a remarkable 16th-century stone path carved into the slopes of the gorge.

Begin the day in the main square of Kapesovo and descend through an oak forest to Kipi, once the historic capital of Zagori. Explore four of the village’s famous stone bridges before continuing along the historic Vitsa Steps, a 200-year-old stone trail leading to the traditional village of Vitsa, where you will spend the night.

A short transfer brings you to Monodendri, the starting point for today's hike across Vikos Gorge. Descend into the canyon to reach the river flowing through its base, then follow the stream into the heart of the National Park. The trail continues through the gorge before a final ascent leads to the traditional village of Vikos, where you will spend the night.

Follow the historic uphill trail through a series of scenic ravines toward the traditional village of Papingo. Along the way, enjoy views of the striking Towers of Papingo rising above the landscape before continuing to Mikro Papingo for dinner and an overnight stay at a local hotel.

Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: -250 m / +600 m

Set out from Mikro Papingo and ascend toward the high plateaus of Mt. Timfi, passing through peaceful mountain scenery on the way to the Astraka Mountain Refuge. After a short break, continue to Drakolimni, an alpine lake at 2,050 m, surrounded by sweeping views of the Pindos mountain range. Return to the Astraka Mountain Refuge for an overnight stay.

Elevation gain: +1,250 m

Leave the Astraka Mountain Refuge and descend across the wide plateaus of the Timfi mountain range. Pass beneath the towering cliffs of Astraka and continue to the seasonal water reservoir of Loutsa Robozi before reaching the head of the impressive Megas Lakos Canyon. From there, follow the trail past a mountain spring and continue into the Tsepelovo area, where your hiking journey comes to an end.

Elevation: -1,200 m
