Explore the wild heart of northern Albania on a three-day journey through dramatic mountain landscapes and remote valleys. This active tour brings together water, mountains, and traditional villages, creating a balanced mix of nature, movement, and local atmosphere shaped by the rhythms of the Albanian Alps.

The route leads through Lake Koman, the Valbona Valley, and the village of Theth, combining a scenic boat crossing with mountain walks and a historic trail once used by locals for travel and trade. Along the way, rocky valleys, forested slopes, and isolated houses reveal a region that still feels untouched and deeply rooted in its past.

Travel unfolds step by step: by road and by boat, then on foot across the mountains, with nights spent in simple family-run guesthouses. The pace is active but rewarding, focusing on essential experiences, carrying only what you need, and letting the landscapes and the journey itself tell the story.

The price is based on shared rooms with single beds, shared with other tour participants. Private rooms are available on request for 20 euros per night.

I really believe I am lucky for being born and living in this attractive country, Albania. Passionate about the wild nature, fascinating history, and mindblowing traditions and local rules, I would be happy to welcome you to Albania and share all this beauty with you and show you around. In the 7 last year I have been exploring my country and working as a tour guide, hotel manager and welcoming service. From all my little experience so far have understood that tourism and promoting my country is something I love and enjoy so I believe I would never get tired of this. Despite my job position, I can not promise you will find me always in the office. I really enjoy guiding and highly participate in Hiking Guides around the Albanian Alps or Peaks of Balkans. Also, we travel quite a lot in cultural sites of Albania and UNESCO sites, so there is a good chance of seeing each other inside a museum, or somewhere in the evening for a Raki! Gezuar! 🙂

Route details

Day 1
From Tirana to Valbona: The Koman Lake Crossing

The day begins before sunrise with an early departure from Tirana at 5:30 am, heading north toward Koman Lake in the Albanian Alps. The drive takes us from smooth roads into more rugged terrain, gradually revealing the wild character of this remote region before we reach the ferry crossing.

At 9:00 am, we board the ferry for a scenic journey across Koman Lake and through the dramatic Drini Canyon. This two-hour cruise is one of the highlights of the day, offering striking views of steep cliffs, narrow gorges, and isolated stone houses that still reflect the quiet, traditional life of the area.

After reaching Fierza, we continue by road toward Valbona, passing through the town of Bajram Curri. Once in the valley, we stop for lunch and head out for a walk in the remote Kukaj area, where you can get a glimpse of local rural life in the mountains.

If time and weather allow, those who wish can enjoy a short, refreshing swim in a crystal-clear natural pool near the guesthouse — a perfect way to end this adventurous day in the Albanian Alps.

This is an active and demanding itinerary designed for travelers with a good level of fitness.

The first day is mostly dedicated to driving and sailing, with a light walk in the Valbona Valley to get used to the terrain and warm up for the days ahead. The second day features the main hike of the tour, covering up to 20 km with an elevation gain of around 1,000 meters, making it the most physically challenging part of the journey.
