This day tour is a Mediterranean escape into one of the most unspoiled parts of the Albanian Riviera, combining sea, mountains, history, and nature in a balanced and active experience. It offers a chance to discover a remote coastal region that remained inaccessible for a long time.

The route leads from Tirana to the Karaburun Peninsula, crossing hilly and rocky terrain with a maximum altitude of about 400 meters. Along the way, the trail opens wide views over the Riviera and the Ionian Sea and introduces the remains of the former communist naval presence. The journey continues along the coast toward the Natural Monument of Duk Gjoni Cave, known for its striking karst formations.

The experience unfolds as a moderate hike that connects viewpoints, bays, historical traces, and natural landmarks into one continuous route. It is designed for travelers who want to explore a remote coastal area while enjoying scenic landscapes and meaningful cultural context.

Also, we travel quite a lot in cultural sites of Albania and UNESCO sites, so there is a good chance of seeing each other inside a museum, or somewhere in the evening for a Raki! Gezuar! 🙂

Route details

We depart from Tirana at 7:00 and drive to the Albanian Coast, heading into the Karaburun Peninsula. After about three hours, we reach the starting point of our hike.

The trail follows a marked path for around an hour, leading to a panoramic viewpoint at approximately 400 meters above sea level, with views over the Ionian Sea and the Albanian Riviera. We then descend toward the coast and continue walking along the shoreline.

From the bay, we follow a coastal path to reach the Natural Monument of Duk Gjoni Cave. This cave is a protected site (IUCN Category III) and is known for its stalactites and stalagmites. It is also an important habitat for bat species such as Chiroptera sp. and Rhinolophus blasii.

Along the route, we pass through areas with characteristic Mediterranean vegetation, including valonia oak, sessile oak (Quercus petraea), and turkey oak forests.
